String was born in 1949, from the hands of Nisse and Kajsa Strinning, and it has been designed and made in Sweden ever since. Its logic is simple and endlessly generous: slender side frames, shelves that clip into place, a system you add to and rearrange as life shifts around it. Start with a single length in a hallway. Extend it across a living room wall. Bring it into a workspace, a kitchen, a child's room, the parts are the same, only the arrangement changes.

It's this adaptability that has carried String from mid-century apartments to the collections of design museums, and into the newer chapters of the range: String Pocket, the most compact shelf in the family, alongside Museum, Relief, Works and Pira. Different scales, one shared idea: furniture that flexes to the way you actually live.

String System

Known for its characteristic panels, designed by architect Kajsa and Nisse Strinning in 1949, the String System is a series of components that offer almost unlimited combinations. You can choose among a wide range of colours and materials to build your own, personal shelving system.

Panels: Start your String by choosing between wall panels in two depths, floor panels, plex wall panels, and galvanized panels for outdoor use.

Shelves: Create your own unique combination with a choice of timeless colours, wood, metal and galvanized steel. The shelves are available in widths and depths to fit into wall or floor panels, with the same depth.

Cabinets: Their cabinets fit into panels from String and come in five different sizes and versions: cabinet with flip door or swing door, cabinet with sliding doors; solid, mirror or glass, chest of drawers and tiny cabinet.

Accessories: Enhance your system with accessories like magazine holder, organizers, hooks, rods, cork dividers etc.

String Pocket

Designed by Nisse Strinning in 2005, String® Pocket became his last contribution to the Scandinavian design portfolio.

In contrast to the String® shelving system, String® Pocket comes as a complete package. One Pocket shelf consists of two wall-hung panels and three shelves in a variety of colour options.

In 2020, the first interpretation of the original String® Pocket design was launched, designed by Anna von Schewen and Björn Dahlström. They kept the essence of the design because, like they said, why change a winning concept? But why not try a new material? This resulted in a brand-new version of the String® Pocket all in metal. It is available in three colours: neon, blue and white.

With perforated shelves you have the option if adding accessories, such as rods and hooks, and increase storage space in no time and make your little Pocket shelf even more useful.

Pira G2

The Pira G2 is a contemporary reinterpretation of Olle Pira’s 1954 design classic, blending vintage brilliance with modern innovation. Originally crafted by the renowned master cabinet-maker Olle Pira, known for his traditional skills and groundbreaking achievements, the Pira G2 reflects a fusion of historical craftsmanship and today’s advanced technology. Designed by architect Anna von Schewen and industrial designer Björn Dahlström, this updated version is both an elegant and robust metallic masterpiece.

Its design features an interlocked series of joints and poles made from extruded aluminum, and shelves crafted from sheet steel with an integral ridge, allowing each shelf to support up to 50 kg and each section up to 350 kg.

The modular structure is engineered to be jointless and seamless, creating a unified piece that stands as a centerpiece in any space. The Pira G2 combines technical sophistication with a calming aesthetic, balancing its industrial strength with a touch of warmth and refinement. This fusion of the past and present results in a sophisticated, functional, and visually striking shelving solution.

Museum

Prior to the re-opening of the completely newly renovated Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, TAF Studio was commissioned to design parts of the interior. Among other products, they designed the brand-new console shelf Museum NM&.045 for String Furniture. The beautifully slender – but oh how robust - shelf now holds sculptures, busts, and other smaller objects from the museum's collections.

And it does this equally well at home. As the Museum family is expanding with the height-adjustable Museum Sidetable, the possibilities become even greater: pedestal, small extra table by the sofa, bedside table, computer table or what your creativity might come up with. For you to always have your favourite belongings within proximity – or placed safely and steady on a secure distance.

Relief

The Relief system consists of chest of drawers and hook rails in three different dimensions and five colours. They can be connected and mixed in size and colour.

Since all parts of the chest of drawers - including the back - have been designed with the same meticulous care, Relief works just as well as a stand-alone piece of furniture as it does in larger, connected groups or as elegant room dividers.

Works

While modern technology enables for working remotely it does not mean everyone have the optimal workspace set-up at home. String decided to develop a new assortment to solve this and teamed up with architect Anna von Schewen and industrial designer Björn Dahlström. They designed modern sit-stand desks, functional essentials such as pull-out drawers and a free-standing shelf where you can insert a filing cabinet and lots more.

The already flexible String® shelving system is the perfect complement to give your workspace even more function and storage space. Pro tip if you already have a String shelf at home is to add a work desk to your shelving system, and suddenly you have a dedicated spot to work from. Everything is designed with the timeless Scandinavian mindset.
